Sorry for the lack of updates, I’ve been insanely busy with more projects then I could ever imagine I could do all in one season. I just wrapped shooting Standard Style’s next magazine as well as I finished scoring the feature film that I’ve been working on for the past 4 months.

Anyway… it’s that time when people start making lists of the favorite albums of the year etc. but I’ll just share one record that has been on repeat ever since it arrived in the mail…

Ford & Lopatin’s Channel Pressure… I’ve already confessed my love for the album here so I won’t go into it anymore but if you haven’t already listened to this neu-nostalgic synth rock album DO IT now.

Here are some photos from a series I shot in Kansas City for Standard Style Magazine. See more from the series on my website Ryan Strong Photography – Kansas City.

I went out on location to the Cross Roads of Kansas City. I knew I wanted to capture the vastness of some of the older architecture in the area so I went out with a wide angle lens (Canon 17-40mm L F/4.0). I was shooting with my Canon 5D MKII. With a lighting assistant motivating or at least naturally blending in along with the available light I was really happy with how the series came out. I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish this without a good team… great models, Lauren and Tyrie, from Wilhemina Models, stylist Emily Baldwin from Standard Style, make-up artist Alexia Culton and hair by Shelby Herrick

A few weeks ago I began writing and recording a score to a feature length movie titled Lionhead directed by friend Thomas Rennier. This is a first for me and am very excited to be a part of this. The film features Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill), Ray Wise (Robocop), Richard Riehle (Office Space, Bridesmaids) and many more. The film has already been shot and is currently in post-production.

The soundtrack that I am writing is pretty diverse ranging from large orchestral arrangements with strings and brass to simple quirky pop rock tunes. Right now I am about a third of the way through and couldn’t enjoy the process any more. It has been such a refreshing feeling writing and recording music again. A soundtrack will be released along side with the movie. Keep checking back as I will being posting more on this.

In addition to the soundtrack I have also created the art direction for the poster and other promo collateral to follow. Here is the poster design… drawing by Phil Borst

Music music, lots of new music coming out. In particular I’m excited to listen to St. Vincent’s new album Strange Mercy. I have yet to get through the album in it’s entirety but the single and the first few tracks sound amazing.

Click to stream St Vincent No Mercy on NPR’s website.

Ryan Adams is set to release Ashes & Fire, his first proper solo record in a few years, and I have to say I cannot wait. It has been awhile and now after listening to “Lucky Now” a song off of this new record it could be safe to say… Mr. Adams is back.

It still has that gloss to it that Easy Tiger had, which I prefer a more grit/raw sound recording like the production on Heartbreaker but “Lucky Now” still feels intimate.

Have a listen…

Lara Stone shoots with Mert & Marcus and channels Mad Men’s Betty Draper; love the wardrobe, styling, the locations and as always Mert & Marcus lighting and post-production. Such a beautiful series…

LEFT – Treated with Mink Oil RIGHT – Untreated

Started to prep my boots up for fall, even though that seems miles away with this heat, because I just got some new mink oil and these needed a treatment bad.

Here is a before profile shot…

…and then after application of mink oil and 1 hour sit.

Love the contrast and deep color that starts to evolve in the leather. Red Wing makes some beautiful boots.

So just discovered this band tonight and I’m kind of obsessed. It’s like a mix of 80′s and 70′s wrapped in a new indie. What more can you ask for? I know I can’t.

The bass lines are incredible, the drums groove nice and love the reverb saturated vocals that can move from falsetto long holding phrasing to a quicker touch and go.

Take a listen to “New Beat” off their recent album Underneath the Pine below, and when you have time check out their music video for “How I Know“… reminds me of a Ghostbumps book!
